but the New Zealand Herald is reporting casualties and major damage to downtown buildings, including Christchurch Cathedral.

In it's blog of life, the Herald reports the phone lines down, water flowing through the streets, and several buildings with serious damage.

One blog entry said TV3 New Zealand Pyne Gould reported the financial services buildings had collapsed. Else, the report claims that the cathedral has argued collapsed.The New Zealand Press Association reported that the TVNZ building in Christchurch has collapsed. And there are entries that the facades of buildings in downtown Christchurch has collapsed on a bus, injuring passengers. NZTV reported at least one death.
